The Wedding
Wedding Cake
Our baker is going to combine the tiers I like circled below into a five-tier cake. Here are the sizes:
top: 6''
second: 8''
third: 11''
fourth: 13''
bottom: 16''
Below is our inspiration.

And here were the images we shared with our baker so she can design the five tiers something like these cut and paste together.
Cake Table
I'd like to adorn the table with plenty of votive candles to give that ambience.

Our cake table will look exactly like this with the spot pinlight provided by Party Pleasers.

We have a banner that says "Vive Les Maries." Translation: may the newly weds live long (in the subjunctive form)

Serving Set
I fell in love with this heirloom-quality cake serving set from Wedgewood's Vera Wang With Love. We hope that it will be a timepiece from our family history from the time we were refugees after the Vietnam War to the day we established our family in the United States. I would be very happy if our future kids used these. On the cake server we are engraving:
The [last name] Family
Estabished [our parents' wedding year]

Groom's Cake
Mostly a Southern tradition, only 30% of The Knot brides polled in 2009 said they're doing a groom's cake. But I really wanted to have one to honor FI so the wedding wouldn't be like my coronation. FI said he would like to have Homer Simpson's wedding cake. But we've chosen a French classic, a pièce montée, aka croquembouche (literally "crunch in mouth.") It's a French tradition served at weddings and is a high cone of profiteroles.
Planning Tips
TIP: Fillings come in an amazing variety. But I have read enough stories and learned that it's best to stay away from the common allergen peanut butter, even if the baker will bake separately and use separate utensils and all. Better to go that extra mile to take care of your guests.
TIP: If you are using black icing for your cake, for example if your theme is the popular black and white damask, be careful that it doesn't color teeth black.
TIP: Plan to have about 15% less cake servings than actual guest counts to incorporate those who may leave early or those who don't like cake. But if you know everyone loves cake, then by all means!

Budget Tips
TIP: If someone in your wedding party is allergic to peanut butter and it's not within your budget to pay a bakery extra to make it nut-free, DIY your groom's cake and serve that to the wedding party instead.
